Really close friends of ours are expecting. They have decided to be surprised on the day so we don't know if we are planning for a boy or a girl.<br />
I decided I really wanted to make something that would/could be around for a long time and would suit whatever nursery colours they ended up having.<br />
I have included the pattern I used at the bottom of this post. <br />
<br />

<br />
I've always liked ripple blankets and thought they were much harder than this, but I would recommend them to anyone!<br />
<br />
----------------------------<br />
PATTERN<br />
With white, chain about 1.5 times as wide as you want your blanket to be. Don't worry if it is too long- you can always cut off the excess of your chain once you've started you valleys and peaks and can see how much you like.<br />
<br />
I like three single crochet up the side of the hill, 3 crochet into the next single crochet, then three single crochet don the other side of the hill. Then, to make the valley, skip two single crochet and start the three going up the hill again.<br />
<br />
At the last "side" of a peak you'll need to skip a single crochet and then turn as normal and skip another as you up the side again- otherwise your piece gradually increases- something I missed the first time I tried this.<br />
<br />
Here is the pattern, properly laid out:<br />
<br />
<b>Row 1: </b>With white , single crochet (sc) in 2nd chain (ch) from hook, sc in next 2 ch,
*3 sc in next ch, sc in next 3 ch, skip (sk) next 2 ch, sc in next 3 ch; repeat
from * to last 4 ch, 3 sc in next ch, sc in next 3 ch - 13 ripples.<br />
<b>Row 2:</b>
Ch 1, turn, skip (sk) first st, sc in next 3 sts, *3 sc in next st, sc in next
3 sts, sk next 2 sts, sc in next 3 sts; rep from * to last 5 sts, 3 sc
in next st, sc in next 2 sts, sk next st, sc in last st.<br />
<br />
<br />
Then I did 6 rows of white and two of the colours.<br />
----------------------------<br />
<br />
Happy crocheting!

Whilst I didn't do too badly in terms of sales it just reinforces to me that I do not like face to face selling. I much prefer on-line selling, where people can choose and buy and I do not have to smile manfully when they pick up my wares, turn them about in their hands and then put it down again. Arg, it kills me.<br />
And then I get all weird when they do want to buy something. Like I want to warn them off, or something. Daft.<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOUsfKkU6HVNPad8m2C8D5hbc3wxeOFhGudRIvfdMfZ5Vt-5D-ml-ZkY09odMdIIdkqlX5bC_qbDrSw4KR-4d17Csq0z0_Wl5A151-FqZ-NRfKKsByshKpw1mRE-SdHbD7G_awJ7LF_nW6/s1600/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+91.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOUsfKkU6HVNPad8m2C8D5hbc3wxeOFhGudRIvfdMfZ5Vt-5D-ml-ZkY09odMdIIdkqlX5bC_qbDrSw4KR-4d17Csq0z0_Wl5A151-FqZ-NRfKKsByshKpw1mRE-SdHbD7G_awJ7LF_nW6/s320/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+91.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I have been eyeing chevron (zigzag) quilts for a while now and the immanent arrival of my sisters baby gave me a great excuse to try this kind of quilt. I could also use plenty of the fabric left over from my <a href="http://littleblackteapot.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/polaroid-quilt.html" target="_blank">Polaroid Quilt.</a><br />
I looked for tutorials online but struggled a bit to understand them, so I thought I would add a quick bit of help for anyone who would like to make a similar zigzag quilt.<br />
<br />
<b><u>Chevron Quilt Tutorial:</u></b><br />
<br />
To start I chose 2 contrasting fabrics, a white and a blue stripe cotton. Cut them into squares.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicNHEcsQtPIS5ZDch0Zm9aGXKpy7WKiTH_nHpnWwGPPVKp2buuCjKoBNU1R-5a5j-BX_cfn7iok911LlisKS7NBBLRyvsHm-9xgU5BLGFDOAEbeDMG-ugAcd1m2sRw1bgghLsadSWgj4EC/s1600/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicNHEcsQtPIS5ZDch0Zm9aGXKpy7WKiTH_nHpnWwGPPVKp2buuCjKoBNU1R-5a5j-BX_cfn7iok911LlisKS7NBBLRyvsHm-9xgU5BLGFDOAEbeDMG-ugAcd1m2sRw1bgghLsadSWgj4EC/s320/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Lay the fabrics on top of each other with the right sides facing each other. Then draw a pencil line from corner to corner. Trust me, you want to draw this line- I have tried eyeballing it, it it is waaaay too hard.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8njEYcSHKJACYn7VSW_sIT-YqG5XISs8vP5wwp9MgbeOdw28fNAauPrkZpMfZ3VjUc_VGIZv9qD3hpMhG1g7YLlm2N5pPoG3e1sW1Yr_lAMZTO_L8qT6TfJ0xpJTZDyepPxi3UtoBmjNZ/s1600/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8njEYcSHKJACYn7VSW_sIT-YqG5XISs8vP5wwp9MgbeOdw28fNAauPrkZpMfZ3VjUc_VGIZv9qD3hpMhG1g7YLlm2N5pPoG3e1sW1Yr_lAMZTO_L8qT6TfJ0xpJTZDyepPxi3UtoBmjNZ/s320/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Now, sew two straight seams on either side of the pencil line. I used the edge of my presser foot to guide me to keep the stitches parallel with the pencil line. I have done it in red thread to make it easier for you to see:
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPDPm9hoXEntyC7oFvN2COWn9IoinYY345X8oXVnt_trv-rqJJirm9zikqejbpSTOqfbWd_BEJgnX6p1uuUKnxCOi4r_2lYJ1R3I7koCZnOXU1I8ATp6s9qKNGs8Pea56m75v78K7ybNkb/s1600/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPDPm9hoXEntyC7oFvN2COWn9IoinYY345X8oXVnt_trv-rqJJirm9zikqejbpSTOqfbWd_BEJgnX6p1uuUKnxCOi4r_2lYJ1R3I7koCZnOXU1I8ATp6s9qKNGs8Pea56m75v78K7ybNkb/s320/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Cut down the pencil line to create two triangles:
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjptQTz_dVGarmoo8cfUXh_Jm8MW3gMBq_DcCiXhWRm0i8L7hi16FJ7sc_WN2i4flB3p7QLrsUO4eoR6OnVfWHU3UZVStLQAbEwVIud1pblIJs_JCrJKDQEnlyIDP3vKu0aONUg7Vs3yH4E/s1600/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjptQTz_dVGarmoo8cfUXh_Jm8MW3gMBq_DcCiXhWRm0i8L7hi16FJ7sc_WN2i4flB3p7QLrsUO4eoR6OnVfWHU3UZVStLQAbEwVIud1pblIJs_JCrJKDQEnlyIDP3vKu0aONUg7Vs3yH4E/s320/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Open out the triangles to form squares again. I ironed them open and I trimmed the corners to make them square. I don't think this is strictly necessary but it helped me to then start treating them as one piece.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKnmckC7wT_1ZEDNZnycbW_6mW0AvjeD1dHkme2RuDiAPFlzFrVtB78zPgZN2S3UGJ0ulrvAJRmo7XHZw5hDSOEz3cWYlNHd5Qx5FzkU4eatTawwBQrJmBeS9yd-WhyphenhyphenKca8UwxHd1z4C3j/s1600/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKnmckC7wT_1ZEDNZnycbW_6mW0AvjeD1dHkme2RuDiAPFlzFrVtB78zPgZN2S3UGJ0ulrvAJRmo7XHZw5hDSOEz3cWYlNHd5Qx5FzkU4eatTawwBQrJmBeS9yd-WhyphenhyphenKca8UwxHd1z4C3j/s320/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And this is where it gets interesting. In the next two photo's I've shown you how these two triangles add together to form the pattern.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXW-rs_0fOaPxPb-wwjeXmejJ97LtVReoOJpC9B9pAZBcLsM5_2ukOZ15bW5N7-ShY021K66SyTmvCedJb0Sfswxs-mhd2HQw1gHRGvtC4sn2ly4NBXluoBSRLE-ZL6V9vxu6Mi0faoyfj/s1600/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXW-rs_0fOaPxPb-wwjeXmejJ97LtVReoOJpC9B9pAZBcLsM5_2ukOZ15bW5N7-ShY021K66SyTmvCedJb0Sfswxs-mhd2HQw1gHRGvtC4sn2ly4NBXluoBSRLE-ZL6V9vxu6Mi0faoyfj/s320/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+6.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYDs-cIgcr-1Gd9E7_GXzfhrg2elbDdfeS0427Zgf897DbqKL_J9tQz2l-OIw3vJsZR-19hup1SWDiRAG7Mu-fMVPmKgEjby2kA_5MioVpZRlpyQcsEu51FUvzqvNDQzE6MmfHVJPXHJK6/s1600/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYDs-cIgcr-1Gd9E7_GXzfhrg2elbDdfeS0427Zgf897DbqKL_J9tQz2l-OIw3vJsZR-19hup1SWDiRAG7Mu-fMVPmKgEjby2kA_5MioVpZRlpyQcsEu51FUvzqvNDQzE6MmfHVJPXHJK6/s320/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+7.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Lol! So, I only made 1 set of triangles but I used a bit of Gimp photo magic to show you how this all fits together to make the quilt:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjuBTfeFSsaczFO6qposNRAq9-HTsLmWihlbUQ-OGLybh8l0dKMrtHj6iUAHHwLarZkUD9OYNzyGfuFO1ug-xPuW6tghfD0rOsVn7rFo7xw0lS8UQxQ9ZJYKXtFeTQMvA1sInlE_j9i4hc/s1600/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="168" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjuBTfeFSsaczFO6qposNRAq9-HTsLmWihlbUQ-OGLybh8l0dKMrtHj6iUAHHwLarZkUD9OYNzyGfuFO1ug-xPuW6tghfD0rOsVn7rFo7xw0lS8UQxQ9ZJYKXtFeTQMvA1sInlE_j9i4hc/s320/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+8.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And on to the quilt shots: (What a kind husband/clothes line!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2HaGuJQnHF6lqxzb5T8lluci6fecfThnaXEjHWs-9ddiVu8_obclPJg91C1FXQuX62b37Uh68IGyUNmwK4-OdmQ6a7l7lC2FNj8x4k5akPQezCAX3cTSElcHggp1K53cj9L8GEP65j96x/s1600/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+91.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2HaGuJQnHF6lqxzb5T8lluci6fecfThnaXEjHWs-9ddiVu8_obclPJg91C1FXQuX62b37Uh68IGyUNmwK4-OdmQ6a7l7lC2FNj8x4k5akPQezCAX3cTSElcHggp1K53cj9L8GEP65j96x/s320/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+91.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
It was pretty overcast (yay UK!), so the colours are a bit odd but here is a close up of the quilt itself.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNzVwFw093uJ2WiIASoFiLH0dOCXr0ThEaDckGgArMt5LudJho7Pi0morhpEjePJyFrtL2V5SjoyiCNPFnUBTgJj_Q-tCshLdI_DhUlIsv-_gdzFzapSyL8syqPqfjMtW-ay4Gn0mXcshf/s1600/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+93.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNzVwFw093uJ2WiIASoFiLH0dOCXr0ThEaDckGgArMt5LudJho7Pi0morhpEjePJyFrtL2V5SjoyiCNPFnUBTgJj_Q-tCshLdI_DhUlIsv-_gdzFzapSyL8syqPqfjMtW-ay4Gn0mXcshf/s320/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+93.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I used a lazy binding which is simply awesome. I folded over the backing towards the front quilt piece. (It's like wrapping a present but you fold it over from the back, making nice corners with an iron). I then top stitched the whole lot down. It saved me from the inevitable heartache of fighting with binding and is MUCH neater than I have ever achieved.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht9rBxQYRuxzpnU4c6fpbwMkK0ALhQUS8-G2oJKLrq5SWj2UhkVszUFeVzMw6TH4bdQdVoOtRI3xg1XiBSotUelQJzYVu9TNm3dbeP74BrYsQB45mLachej_t-urDrU3xCdiHO1Z_7ejq0/s1600/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+92.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht9rBxQYRuxzpnU4c6fpbwMkK0ALhQUS8-G2oJKLrq5SWj2UhkVszUFeVzMw6TH4bdQdVoOtRI3xg1XiBSotUelQJzYVu9TNm3dbeP74BrYsQB45mLachej_t-urDrU3xCdiHO1Z_7ejq0/s320/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+92.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I used a deep red spotty fabric for the reverse and added my own label so the baby will know its from me in years to come.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCcQcEKYRUv_uaqr9nsFylZVM4LRze5lWxTaoeSkIQb_p_RBikF3XnguKetegYtwXiA-4fvwjLtNTP2yZUmSfq8AAMZxixKI00mNxcWcc8fRmXadT19kjU7lIu3A6xF7RO8x0niirTCa9h/s1600/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+95.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCcQcEKYRUv_uaqr9nsFylZVM4LRze5lWxTaoeSkIQb_p_RBikF3XnguKetegYtwXiA-4fvwjLtNTP2yZUmSfq8AAMZxixKI00mNxcWcc8fRmXadT19kjU7lIu3A6xF7RO8x0niirTCa9h/s320/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+95.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I really like the spotty fabric as a backing because it shows off the quilting I did in the ditch of the seams: <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsvrkl04dQenFYcskd993GKGMfZF_1kUzULRSpcp_ldkchWisXvd5tr6_8NmGAMC79k_ZWCvhUOs7dbkM3pD2lX1WNNih6ktne_ZgAiENU7D7bD6oZ7J-vNX8C3kH3kfh62goHK00xdNys/s1600/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+94.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsvrkl04dQenFYcskd993GKGMfZF_1kUzULRSpcp_ldkchWisXvd5tr6_8NmGAMC79k_ZWCvhUOs7dbkM3pD2lX1WNNih6ktne_ZgAiENU7D7bD6oZ7J-vNX8C3kH3kfh62goHK00xdNys/s320/Chevron+zig+zag+quilt+tutorial+94.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>

Leave a comment if you have any questions on how to make this type of quilt. It comes together far faster than expected and it feels awesome to see it take shape.<br />

I have very strong memories of being sent to my bedroom to have an afternoon nap and spending (what seemed like hours) staring at the characters on my duvet covers or in the pictures in my books as I got older. For this reason I wanted to do a Polaroid quilt that would allow me to use many of the very cute fabrics with awesome designs but without the very clashing nature that I feel eye-spy quilts often have.<br />

I found most of the cottons online on eBay and it was a relatively
inexpensive way to collect the stash that I needed without having metres
of fabric I cannot imagine using again.
I went with a much simpler method of applique, so that i didn't have to test my math and seam allowance skills to create the blocks. I am super lazy that way. I used possibly more batting than I should have too, since the unquilted spaces are rather poofy now!<br />
As a side note- I also have no idea how big it is since I simply winged it. me and measuring don't really get on, as you may have picked up by now :) <br />
Some completed shots held up by my dh in our not very sunny garden in the UK:<br />

It surprised me at how easy it is to do actually.<br />
<u>And</u> since we have a bit of a prejudice against paid for proprietary software in our house it was done entirely through <a href="http://www.gimp.org/" target="_blank">GIMP</a>. I would suggest using many many layers (one for each bit of text) so you can move them, and change sizes etc independently to help with the design.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSNzZtfD2NVLlPz3JHmBBCHpjtTaRyBs_w_hx4Or1b4Q7BG0y8o5m6lU5foKkVWVWu3PsALvRigy4qMETq06SgSOAliuOOU04Pw7xupikJUfS5CbATVyb_8yzZzc7ps2ooUV7Kz26RjCfF/s1600/hOMES9.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSNzZtfD2NVLlPz3JHmBBCHpjtTaRyBs_w_hx4Or1b4Q7BG0y8o5m6lU5foKkVWVWu3PsALvRigy4qMETq06SgSOAliuOOU04Pw7xupikJUfS5CbATVyb_8yzZzc7ps2ooUV7Kz26RjCfF/s400/hOMES9.png" width="282" /></a></div>
<br />
Also- I'm not sure if this helped, but I started from the bottom. I have
read before that if you are trying to replicate something by drawing
(like a portrait etc) you should turn the image upside down when you
copy it so you can ignore/turn off the "this is a face" part of your
brain. Which apparently helps you to focus more on producing a faithful
copy than interpreting what you are doing and so getting in your own
way. I think it helped to start from the bottom because it is something I
would never do and it meant I wasn't in a comfort zone, so I was more
creative. Who knows?<br />
<br />
Incidentally: these are all place names that DH and I have lived in. Arcadia is the area we lived in when we first shared a flat. I toyed with colouring the words- something like yellow for me alone, blue for hubby and green for both of us- but it just looked a bit contrived. And whilst the print is semi-balanced in monochrome, with three colours it becomes a bit more than my little graphic design skills can deal with :)<br />
Also dear dear husband told me that Irene, in the top right hand corner, looked evil in whatever colour I chose. I didn't want to agree, but the seed was planted....<br />
This is doubly weird since Irene is a quiet little village which is so sweet that you definitely can imagine a horror movie waiting to be set there.<br />
Edit: Here are two of the coloured versions (Made the right choice, eh?)<br />
<br />

It turned out cuter than I expected although tying the lambs to the rig is a pain. I have yet to find the right kind of string/thread to hang them by and so they inevitably break or tangle or end up higher/lower than I wanted. Please please leave a comment and give me suggestions for this as I LOVE making mobiles but this is driving me insane.<br />

And it may not be incredibly PC. I think he has always had a healthy mistrust of authority and blindly following but he really only codified it a couple of weeks ago. See<a href="http://xkcd.com/137/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> this cartoon</a>.<br />
Somehow when I took his name this attitude imparted itself to me when I signed the marriage certificate. Awkward.<br />
<br />
Either way, I believe our house requires our family motto.<br />

My newest mobile is this little felt bi-plane.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

DH told me that the plane's propeller looks like a moustache and now I can't help seeing it that way! Weirdly I am then reminded of the Red Baron that Snoopy dog fights then :) <br />

This little plane fits in my hand and is so light because of the felt and fibrefill that it spins merrily in the wind. <br />

It is currently snowing outside so I'm not really opening windows to feel the arctic breeze but I did spend a couple happy minutes blowing this bi-plane around just to watch it dip and whirl.<br />

It's been a hectic couple of months, between a new job and a new home I now have a new craft space that is slightly larger- woohoo! Up until this point most of my crafting using my sewing machine has been done in slightly less than a meter square, perched on the edge of my futon, crouched in front of my sewing machine table which has one leg considerably shorter than the other two. I have moved to an actual desk and a real cupboard for my supplies instead- oh the luxury! I give you this nugget of my life to help you know that it can be done- not all of us get fully equipped craft rooms with shiny cutting tables and ribbon organisers and peg boards. but you can still create and give freedom to your ideas.<br />
<br />
So! one of the ideas that was recently born is Horace:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimNyXjMebuWMYEkg2t_FAjvpc7XxOZRqowV78VuB-5w7bJgZhDPta9QeSaTwZHxw6QV5wmxPkYbJp5rfCrAZgf9fqjvjemaxqL3kGhRMuJoMEkk4Ur4YCh39CvSDUs79z4J4220J8tRASo/s1600/Giraffe+Crochet+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimNyXjMebuWMYEkg2t_FAjvpc7XxOZRqowV78VuB-5w7bJgZhDPta9QeSaTwZHxw6QV5wmxPkYbJp5rfCrAZgf9fqjvjemaxqL3kGhRMuJoMEkk4Ur4YCh39CvSDUs79z4J4220J8tRASo/s320/Giraffe+Crochet+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3IOYImHRQMp2ulVriV-vz9kiZZdkV4fMfdAn6oLJygJvGfMAGYmyHaWJBRabwnUbQNGjK-VPyksFWykWLadFBDQ6HPJy_QYIzyHN_6Pz_So0rryXP85CsX-ys9bALR3Qy6zJSUMqsRHzE/s1600/Giraffe+Crochet+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3IOYImHRQMp2ulVriV-vz9kiZZdkV4fMfdAn6oLJygJvGfMAGYmyHaWJBRabwnUbQNGjK-VPyksFWykWLadFBDQ6HPJy_QYIzyHN_6Pz_So0rryXP85CsX-ys9bALR3Qy6zJSUMqsRHzE/s320/Giraffe+Crochet+5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Horace was supposed to be a crochet giraffe. But Horace grew to be his own thing- I'm not sure he is a giraffe, but that's OK, I like him.<br />

The parents don't want to know the sex of these happy additions so for now we all know them as Topsy and Turvey. We're driving for 3 hours to see the couple before the arrival of these piglets and I simply had to take something in anticipation.<br />
Firstly, the husband is a member of the Labour party like mine, and the two boys like nothing more than discussing the state of the world over a couple of beers. As a tribute to his leanings I had these printed by a lovely seller I found on Ebay.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1Fc7UY3kqMWu1ydjb8gBzOISJFHfBsQFrN2iFshoE3i5INbhkxAmVa6BDje3l6BV7lO_m7E7BmvcqPpROnuAJfxVnSxF0LSN8m04viA106-NPoD7iTNrVDLmLuCvLUPBj_OgmqZmW8NqV/s1600/Hammer+Sickle+communist+baby+grow+onesie+twin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1Fc7UY3kqMWu1ydjb8gBzOISJFHfBsQFrN2iFshoE3i5INbhkxAmVa6BDje3l6BV7lO_m7E7BmvcqPpROnuAJfxVnSxF0LSN8m04viA106-NPoD7iTNrVDLmLuCvLUPBj_OgmqZmW8NqV/s320/Hammer+Sickle+communist+baby+grow+onesie+twin.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Hammer and Sickle baby onesies! Awesome not so? And the quality of the onesies is simply great- nice, thick cotton. For the second set I shamelessly stole an idea from a Pinterest post and appliqued "copy" and "paste" on two more onesies.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglZAWrOPMzvpoUNiaiZCCFV9Me4NyFrFn-_TZcSXW9dvJfrKCiy2i5AG-a1Q45gRyKjZsy3u9gx56otV1YBxXhqrnJzp0WHayrpjq7g_cTxYtOx6j-uSmSjn9y0n2qBEjE9uLW1jOk9XOr/s1600/copy+paste+baby+grow+onesie+twins+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglZAWrOPMzvpoUNiaiZCCFV9Me4NyFrFn-_TZcSXW9dvJfrKCiy2i5AG-a1Q45gRyKjZsy3u9gx56otV1YBxXhqrnJzp0WHayrpjq7g_cTxYtOx6j-uSmSjn9y0n2qBEjE9uLW1jOk9XOr/s320/copy+paste+baby+grow+onesie+twins+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>I shan't show you my appalling aplique skills, it looks pretty decent from this distance but these are unfortunatley not such nice quality (oh, ebay, you hit-and-miss mistress!) so the stitches look a bit pulled because of the low thread count. sigh. It's the idea behind the gift right?<br />
<br />
On a completely different note, I made my first apron for a friends birthday.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoljxun9wCUJqh2BscHn-QlRrZDRtKx9cuQP8JhyPhTBKqbZryJVEvlvAZabvRuH4iUhHhSkvFcSKbVIc5egVTZRmkd1IezftYR-2cP8NX3nKm8JuwKMiv1sXhSMpZC0wvAsyK9YnlE0Tp/s1600/Cute+apron+puppy+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoljxun9wCUJqh2BscHn-QlRrZDRtKx9cuQP8JhyPhTBKqbZryJVEvlvAZabvRuH4iUhHhSkvFcSKbVIc5egVTZRmkd1IezftYR-2cP8NX3nKm8JuwKMiv1sXhSMpZC0wvAsyK9YnlE0Tp/s320/Cute+apron+puppy+1.jpg" width="190" /></a></div>Just a simple pattern but without any fussy gathering. Do you have any tips for this kind of thing? Also- what sells? I imagine a stall is different from <a href="http://www.folksy.com/shops/gekkogirl12">my online shop</a>. The top is just a disappearing 9 patch, which looks way more complicated than it actually is. I didn't get it perfect and there are some flaws but I'm OK with it and it's staying with me so I'm doubly chilled :).<br />
Most of the colours were an eBay bundle of kona solid fat quarters and one grey shirt of my husbands. The binding is just plain dye sheeting that I bought on sale. The orange I've been hoarding for a project for me.<br />
<br />

I freehand embroidered the quilt sandwich which took a full weekend and I'm thinking next time I'd do it a bit less densely. I used grey thread on the Block side and orange thread in my bobbin for the orange cross side. It kind of highlights how little my machine likes free hand embroidery because the pulled and skipped stitches show up very clearly!<br />

Do you have a favourite quilt pattern that looks complicated but is easy for a beginner like me? I think I'm done with this variation for now but am thinking the quilting bug has taken hold.....Anathemahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08108979281486557853noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1347387927042023541.post-36892505737706254812011-05-15T14:21:00.007+01:002017-02-11T18:37:58.482+00:00Plush Dinosaur with Sewing Pattern<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Finally the long awaited stuffed/plush dinosaur (brontosaur (Apatosaurus) vs diplodocus continues!) tutorial with sewing pattern! I've wanted a dino plushie/stuffie for a long time so I made three! :)<br />

<br />
For this project you will need:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Paper pattern pieces cut from the <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3n1KeNgDf-kOrBAWpq85bW83uTNKcjE88XhHhAl6qBt7NXxzZFrDGll7nojBYnVPB1tU7vGSGfhci-v7g2pPxxhePz9E27d2tE9Y6p2XGo4NDe6YXSM-yFWxkIfPZQdZd4nKbc9mN3gjz/w1300-h880-rw/" target="_blank">Stuffed Dinosaur sewing pattern Page 1 of 2</a> and <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSurE7cHMc8-CUNL37aTv-zKpxyKgbFUBS-5ALmr9p2O0d1pX4cCHMjuTP1yFYbQpUVd_MRkSHuSPl9a8Q2Vx7eY-99R3dcdKm_49Vas0SUdCRIhDmxWpstl_kflnBr0w0bPw0efjFaDES/w1240-h880-rw/" target="_blank">Stuffed Dinosaur sewing pattern Page 2 of 2</a>. To print properly to a full A4 you need to Download the images then print them. Each of these pattern pieces is an A4 or standard letter size sheet. Join the sheets along the dotted line and cut the pattern pieces. A seam allowance of 0.5cm (1/4 inch) is given, add more if you like.</li>
<li>Fabric- I used good old quilting cotton here but any non-stretchy material will do, although heavier upholstery type fabrics will be harder to turn right side out. Use a fun contrasting fabric for the scales along the back or even a multitude of colours.</li>
<li>1 pair safety eyes- these are easy to find in craft store, fabric stores and on the net but you could replace them with felt eyes, fabric paint eyes, buttons etc.</li>
<li>Stuffing- I used fibre fill but old pillow stuffing, sewing scraps etc could be substituted</li>
<li>Scissors</li>
<li>Thread</li>
</ul>
To begin:<br />
Cut all your pattern pieces like so- <br />
Note the blue scales at the bottom are two pieces of fabric each. For the scales I used three of the larger scales, two of the medium and one of the smallest. Remember to cut two of the sides of the bodies and only 1 of the underside of the body. You'll need four of the circles for the pads of the feet.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQI_DfziVEwje_M2lPYTG1Dq1wa8ARc_sOidDtAxrPF0_7emqYh514W0wZF9G1IAsHo2vjIJzMfPOVw0ds1bjHr-_RleQfoHoWuPekbnlu3lbT8xr6HOwnLBzgrEtWYQET9erz89H7_RDC/s1600/Dinosaur+pattern+tutorial+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQI_DfziVEwje_M2lPYTG1Dq1wa8ARc_sOidDtAxrPF0_7emqYh514W0wZF9G1IAsHo2vjIJzMfPOVw0ds1bjHr-_RleQfoHoWuPekbnlu3lbT8xr6HOwnLBzgrEtWYQET9erz89H7_RDC/s320/Dinosaur+pattern+tutorial+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
With the fabric wrong sides together, sew the all scales along four sides only, leaving the bottom edge unsewn to enable turning right side out, as shown below:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh2mzNEFGOAfL5m6Ln-SqeL5Errmi1uZ8kBEoUf1f5ql7S1q62XhIx9z54xwM-EUebmqmUJ7qb6a3gC-OGZA3KeMuLueKO-HNZUpVKH0q-NEONrF_XnMl5cTcHE8eC17E3bn1COoCuKNab/s1600/Dinosaur+pattern+tutorial+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh2mzNEFGOAfL5m6Ln-SqeL5Errmi1uZ8kBEoUf1f5ql7S1q62XhIx9z54xwM-EUebmqmUJ7qb6a3gC-OGZA3KeMuLueKO-HNZUpVKH0q-NEONrF_XnMl5cTcHE8eC17E3bn1COoCuKNab/s320/Dinosaur+pattern+tutorial+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This seam allowance is only 0.5 of a cm else the scales get too bulky. At each corner snip away the fabric as shown so that the corners are pointy when we turn them right sides out.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg80_okEfsFkew8WqKjAZUfqM0hfGP-V7iMlzUZJVhyphenhyphen4_NtDlEVjf24KVPmvi-hpSVIm3Nx6xVK1QmWKQI69mEWPhGgQJymrSTkUpNGvUbaV0MEAdfYurNlsCh9kVZ_AA5aQgY5Y22gUkdd/s1600/Dinosaur+pattern+tutorial+03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg80_okEfsFkew8WqKjAZUfqM0hfGP-V7iMlzUZJVhyphenhyphen4_NtDlEVjf24KVPmvi-hpSVIm3Nx6xVK1QmWKQI69mEWPhGgQJymrSTkUpNGvUbaV0MEAdfYurNlsCh9kVZ_AA5aQgY5Y22gUkdd/s320/Dinosaur+pattern+tutorial+03.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Turn all the scales right sides out (and press with an iron if you wish) and place to one side. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next take the underside of the body piece and fold the leg sections towards the middle of the piece. Then sew a shallow arc as shown in the photo- this will enable the legs to stand underneath the body instead of splaying out to the side. Do this for each leg. Do not worry if there is not very much left of the "belly" material left. It'll work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Next by matching up the leg pieces and starting at the feet sew the underside of the body to the side of the body. Note- DO NOT sew up the bottom of the feet. The photo below shows the three seams- front leg to chin, back of front leg to front of back leg and finally back leg to underside tail. Also note that the underside body only reaches to the chin and stops before the end of the tail.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAt3SZCyugAov4rc42K19larAp7hyphenhyphen6P2mT73UZI4ZSR-s48cEv4_tX925TAEtyCVcnlr8qYzsRV1mym775DS8Tabo2HPn6Lm7m5XVlnKs6fDgwE1gQHLJDt0xAGeNG9Fjc1DehWVrXr2dc/s1600/Dinosaur+pattern+tutorial+05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAt3SZCyugAov4rc42K19larAp7hyphenhyphen6P2mT73UZI4ZSR-s48cEv4_tX925TAEtyCVcnlr8qYzsRV1mym775DS8Tabo2HPn6Lm7m5XVlnKs6fDgwE1gQHLJDt0xAGeNG9Fjc1DehWVrXr2dc/s320/Dinosaur+pattern+tutorial+05.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Sew the other side body to the piece created above using the same method of starting at one of the legs. Here is a detail shot of what should happen at the the tail. It looks very similar at the chin. DO NOT at this stage sew along the back or around the head, Only sew the underside of the body to the side pieces. Not the side pieces to each other.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhndJAtWPXeBQhiKoE7ra-Z-5i-ju5ZVszmma_RR8S4MC6K11a8snkoKc6UhA3g3Xgv_UzXKti9gLfdHSkZhz2bggw64SJoeM2T6hImjOhapWe_voUsk4N8DS14fIMfz5PqwgDCrw892Gkx/s1600/Dinosaur+pattern+tutorial+07.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhndJAtWPXeBQhiKoE7ra-Z-5i-ju5ZVszmma_RR8S4MC6K11a8snkoKc6UhA3g3Xgv_UzXKti9gLfdHSkZhz2bggw64SJoeM2T6hImjOhapWe_voUsk4N8DS14fIMfz5PqwgDCrw892Gkx/s320/Dinosaur+pattern+tutorial+07.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another detail look at those legs before sewing all together- as you can see the arcs on the lower body will make those legs sections shorter. That is OK! Since I can't regulate how shallow or deep your arcs will be this is variable so I made the legs the same length and you can trim them to the same length.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIqK-93ziWAiUyv6HdYVAHbGsGk0R1dr2HJIAZ6qukvTVgga52SbaBP-zwpyAmUYNaZuZQ70RvaRpsTbUixp01yrJDBhIkcOtAi0sLEsUiGuZDvHqX-XLHCm3KQOdoQiCcGEansYDLdZZn/s1600/Dinosaur+pattern+tutorial+06.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIqK-93ziWAiUyv6HdYVAHbGsGk0R1dr2HJIAZ6qukvTVgga52SbaBP-zwpyAmUYNaZuZQ70RvaRpsTbUixp01yrJDBhIkcOtAi0sLEsUiGuZDvHqX-XLHCm3KQOdoQiCcGEansYDLdZZn/s320/Dinosaur+pattern+tutorial+06.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That is the underside of the body complete.</div>
Take your scales and line them along your dinosaurs back. I placed mine largest to smallest.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-xsZj_sTYUC9RNlRDUVksaW8NfJf45hUYvAYDj2tk7Ag-1SCXjcFbg-4E8MmN6QdEPgbsepcAstL7ZUVvNhm6JpZ2UVPY4RzmBawfTT2SR_dA2CwHq1lOniDSZZgqCL-toT4m7pUnFiqA/s1600/Dinosaur+pattern+tutorial+09.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-xsZj_sTYUC9RNlRDUVksaW8NfJf45hUYvAYDj2tk7Ag-1SCXjcFbg-4E8MmN6QdEPgbsepcAstL7ZUVvNhm6JpZ2UVPY4RzmBawfTT2SR_dA2CwHq1lOniDSZZgqCL-toT4m7pUnFiqA/s320/Dinosaur+pattern+tutorial+09.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Flip each of the scales towards the inside of the body, sandwiching each scale between the side body pieces. Pin these in place since they tend to move about.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilFuS6nOLkhZY2YdlrVsoQIJpAELeTEYcPlRLA_aZsGkLzKaHEYKCAVrs1qMY4i0iB3CD9UpMSCfre30_Do7R9_8xmwfB2YhdXTlxHYHcC10GCJlRQpLF99e1AYTZioEdNoFsSgl5eMw4G/s1600/Dinosaur+pattern+tutorial+10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilFuS6nOLkhZY2YdlrVsoQIJpAELeTEYcPlRLA_aZsGkLzKaHEYKCAVrs1qMY4i0iB3CD9UpMSCfre30_Do7R9_8xmwfB2YhdXTlxHYHcC10GCJlRQpLF99e1AYTZioEdNoFsSgl5eMw4G/s320/Dinosaur+pattern+tutorial+10.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I didn't get any photo's of the next few steps.<br />
Sew the body closed by starting at the chest where the underside of the body piece ends, around the head and to the tail. The only opening should be the undersides of the feet. Sew three of the four feet circles into three of the four leg tubes to complete them. For help on this see "Making the Feet" in the <a href="http://littleblackteapot.blogspot.com/2010/11/baby-elephant-tutorial.html">Baby Elephant Tutorial</a>. Use the remaining open foot to turn the dinosaur the right way around.<br />
At this point I loosely stuff just the head to get a feel for it and mark where I want the eyes to be. Then I remove the stuffing and insert the safety eyes according to their instructions. You can skip this step if painting or sewing on the eyes later<br />
Beginning at the head and tip of the tail stuff the dinosaur firmly. If he is too soft his neck will flop from side to side. Once the stuffing is completed sew the last foot pad circle into the last open leg to close it.<br />
That's it! Make an army of colourful dinosaurs and have a congratulatory cup of tea!<br />
(The dino on the left was my prototype is a slightly different shape)<br />

Please leave me a comment if you liked this project or, if you've made one, I'd love a link and perhaps I'll show it to everyone else in an update! Happy sewing!<br />
<br />
PS Two of these Dinosaurs are available in the <a href="http://www.folksy.com/shops/gekkogirl12">Little Black Teapot Shop </a><br />
<br />
Edit: Here is a quick sketch of how I close up the seams that are left using a whip stitch:<br />
The "right side" of the fabric is the patterned side and the wrong is the other side. I have shown where the thread goes using dots but the dotty art will not be seen.<br />
Hope this helps :) <br />

This is apparently like honey to bad luck flies. Seriously, a close family member dies, husband changes jobs (not for good reasons) and then husband slips a disc in his back and is bed ridden for three weeks.<br />
<br />
But the interesting thing is this- it turns out I craft to relive stress. So there has been oodles of crafting- it's just that blogging is not stress relieving in the same way,so the proof of all the crafting starts now!<br />
<br />
I had to make a mobile for my then soon-to-be-born Godson. I made many different its before settling on one idea but the others are still around and I'll sell them in my shop on Folksy. One of the ideas not to make the cut was this steam punk type airship:<br />

What need? Well! I like to buy the larger packs of snack etc because it's cheaper than lots of single helpings. However, these packs are not very easy to handle- trying to reseal a large pack of biscuits with an elastic band in a moving car on a road trip is not fun! The second need is very simple. If you give me a new packet of biscuits in a car I won't stop and will eat them all! This way I can portion out only a few and car trips can cease being a weight-gain fest... </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">These bags are easy to squeeze into the small spaces left when we've crammed the car for holiday and are wipe clean (but can be turned inside out and really washed if required). They also satisfy me eco-conscience because I'm not constantly buying plastic bags and containers.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I made some of these for an expectant mum and they went down really well! She has plans to use them for damp flannels to wipe dirty faces, sterilized pacifiers etc.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxqNVuAH_zJTVlEShLcdOiSY1lQB49TZjrLwwyoa3oXiw9fJB6G2f6adv5h5HCfdsftjOR5SwtycEQ6XuyfOPkIqMQGFRojWP0oulgzDbamyDhDv1IlGNdt5V4u-YMpu8y4tb8B5talgXc/s1600/Snack+Bag+Tutorial+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxqNVuAH_zJTVlEShLcdOiSY1lQB49TZjrLwwyoa3oXiw9fJB6G2f6adv5h5HCfdsftjOR5SwtycEQ6XuyfOPkIqMQGFRojWP0oulgzDbamyDhDv1IlGNdt5V4u-YMpu8y4tb8B5talgXc/s320/Snack+Bag+Tutorial+1.jpg" width="298" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">To begin:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We will need </div><ul><li>Fabric- 1 window piece 20cm (8inches) by 24cm (9 and a half inches) and 1 back piece 20cm (8inches) by 20cm (8inches).</li>
<li>Clear plastic 2 pieces to the same dimensions as the fabric. (A note: I had the plastic left over from a clear plastic table cloth protector but you can buy this type of plastic in smaller amounts too. If you're willing to sacrifice the display window you can even fuse some plastic bags together to create the lining)</li>
<li>Hook and loop tape (velcro) about 8cm (3inches)</li>
<li>Bias binding (this can be avoided if you serge/overlock the edges instead)</li>
<li>Scissors</li>
<li>Thread</li>
</ul><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRxfBd5-tJeP8sV4E3BS6Iz4ahwaxDXtwCZqqf8ceXvb05mXJPPpsHq4mYkzLfiwZqWV_QMgOQV8_l76Fp28bj8xaF7h2sUj9YHiYDbmUY44HwiJY3XjJnAy_xWKx6BSINhrMNx1Lr1p4j/s1600/Snack+Bag+Tutorial+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRxfBd5-tJeP8sV4E3BS6Iz4ahwaxDXtwCZqqf8ceXvb05mXJPPpsHq4mYkzLfiwZqWV_QMgOQV8_l76Fp28bj8xaF7h2sUj9YHiYDbmUY44HwiJY3XjJnAy_xWKx6BSINhrMNx1Lr1p4j/s320/Snack+Bag+Tutorial+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> First, let's cut the window. Take the larger piece and cut a hole in the bottom half of about 8x8cm (3x3inches). Try and centre the window with and equal amount of space on the sides and the bottom. NOTE: Do not do like I did and get so excited about cutting the window that I cut it so the pattern is facing the wrong way! Doh! now my skull pirates are upside down :(<br />
Next cut a 1.5cm (half inch) diagonal at the corners of your window like in the photo below:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgObX8Eu_kXf5X_XnI4qcQzQB3OBKYBGNKq8wNhKCa0XbTFrtS-ZtaoWCxAzk0o76rr6JbJ2CjlgJgU2PDUur1pif_KZl-DwtnlhvOAU9QrZwZH0bIX3_EBBBDBMx7C7NX23XgQQLFh8HBV/s1600/Snack+Bag+Tutorial+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgObX8Eu_kXf5X_XnI4qcQzQB3OBKYBGNKq8wNhKCa0XbTFrtS-ZtaoWCxAzk0o76rr6JbJ2CjlgJgU2PDUur1pif_KZl-DwtnlhvOAU9QrZwZH0bIX3_EBBBDBMx7C7NX23XgQQLFh8HBV/s320/Snack+Bag+Tutorial+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> At this point you could iron the folds inwards - but this project is DO EASY. So it's not necessary if you don't want to crack out the iron and speed and instantaneous gratification are more your thing!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg00xZweVgNgCFaTvZQjb0CRbq7auF22TdrgkvCM4_I1wzZgg7GB0kZMJplFChFCEB5w19FlXZLkis__DRQlMwIUJsIycO0Rbpcugbp7IzyiKTzSSyS_dvnAiHowKZAXXaAbFqYY52jxrEK/s1600/Snack+Bag+Tutorial+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg00xZweVgNgCFaTvZQjb0CRbq7auF22TdrgkvCM4_I1wzZgg7GB0kZMJplFChFCEB5w19FlXZLkis__DRQlMwIUJsIycO0Rbpcugbp7IzyiKTzSSyS_dvnAiHowKZAXXaAbFqYY52jxrEK/s320/Snack+Bag+Tutorial+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Here's is a close up of the corners for clarity: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5yjnyuJwv3OcsggMPodX-_zemb0O3Hz0rmeeot7uNQtvYLLrE9JWccIGceUhtZ-DUTiWd3ZkXQqoXE_Z094lsW71I7Y47dO8AVLOAdYAt0luyQSSUStICwN9W9Bx6Nh7g-8_u5k54N9-D/s1600/Snack+Bag+Tutorial+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5yjnyuJwv3OcsggMPodX-_zemb0O3Hz0rmeeot7uNQtvYLLrE9JWccIGceUhtZ-DUTiWd3ZkXQqoXE_Z094lsW71I7Y47dO8AVLOAdYAt0luyQSSUStICwN9W9Bx6Nh7g-8_u5k54N9-D/s320/Snack+Bag+Tutorial+5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> Next, sew the smaller back fabric piece to it's corresponding plastic backing with the right side of the fabric facing away from the plastic. It can be helpful to sew with the fabric side on your feed dogs (the little feet that move the fabric forward under your presser foot.) The plastic can get stuck on these whereas I found the plastic slid happily under my presser foot.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH7Cj4Ih24m-nHwRFtwO6ONhEtG5Ur85fYJnhVT6EkA6AVI2xZS92rwZ3e-NHhA1LXFIdTkrBLXYzqDNo5h_5eux-j9JWnxUzb3U0Sd_THvCDlFvVzLX_mmC9AwDkTwmUhBbmSsVSN2h_v/s1600/Snack+Bag+Tutorial+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH7Cj4Ih24m-nHwRFtwO6ONhEtG5Ur85fYJnhVT6EkA6AVI2xZS92rwZ3e-NHhA1LXFIdTkrBLXYzqDNo5h_5eux-j9JWnxUzb3U0Sd_THvCDlFvVzLX_mmC9AwDkTwmUhBbmSsVSN2h_v/s320/Snack+Bag+Tutorial+6.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> Again- this project is about speed and ease. Don't worry if it's not too straight (see below), I include a chop off your mistakes step!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7nWBldkw8YS3RmQ0tGZnLkb_W7LCzzJvPzh_j0Ynzq5cMbJM1Ev8BUp6Aru8xMDJh77C4HvPQ_LGPNMTXz5PVYqHJgP0MaP81LuIIl813RQUs5ZWXgX7r1uoDqAlsd-R6wRUja-pLMNfj/s1600/Snack+Bag+Tutorial+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7nWBldkw8YS3RmQ0tGZnLkb_W7LCzzJvPzh_j0Ynzq5cMbJM1Ev8BUp6Aru8xMDJh77C4HvPQ_LGPNMTXz5PVYqHJgP0MaP81LuIIl813RQUs5ZWXgX7r1uoDqAlsd-R6wRUja-pLMNfj/s320/Snack+Bag+Tutorial+7.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> Now, on one of the short 20cm (8inch) sides fold the fabric-plastic sandwich over twice to make a finished edge. Like this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMlbIn3nzy8-JZYRBFNm4VdgAixleV5Ngfip24A-GfFRenuko8kg6kIIyspnutHnt28KUjZ_kM0Qgzo9YCrCnqQespCHJTKpmSV3kfoJ_p7hEEISoEjmLVxT_RQWswBUCPzogeuJYtl_9h/s1600/Snack+Bag+Tutorial+8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMlbIn3nzy8-JZYRBFNm4VdgAixleV5Ngfip24A-GfFRenuko8kg6kIIyspnutHnt28KUjZ_kM0Qgzo9YCrCnqQespCHJTKpmSV3kfoJ_p7hEEISoEjmLVxT_RQWswBUCPzogeuJYtl_9h/s320/Snack+Bag+Tutorial+8.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> On the same edge, sew one of the pieces of velcro:<br />

<br />
OK. Now take the larger front fabric piece and sew to it's plastic counterpart with the right side of the fabric facing away from the plastic. Once this is done it is easy to fold back the window flaps under the fabric outer and sew down (I used a zigzag stitch).<br />

I think this is very inconsiderate. <i>Obviously </i>I'll be crafting like mad, but now I'll have to pay for my makings not only in sweat and blood (hand sewing is torture) but also in postal costs! The agony!<br />
<br />
Anyhoo. Here is one of many baby related crafts I've been sinking into:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw2VCas3-H35YUPclJNG1pmEkyqFkydVjnO5_8tBnPpCBQV3zsaP6wah26y83u4IJmyzyGSL95lvMK1hyCH7daSOw1zYjoPJ5saO6WIdl_2cQhyphenhyphendyNmei5mhTuH2mcuMbX9D18IQDdEKMO/s1600/Dinosaur+stuffed+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw2VCas3-H35YUPclJNG1pmEkyqFkydVjnO5_8tBnPpCBQV3zsaP6wah26y83u4IJmyzyGSL95lvMK1hyCH7daSOw1zYjoPJ5saO6WIdl_2cQhyphenhyphendyNmei5mhTuH2mcuMbX9D18IQDdEKMO/s320/Dinosaur+stuffed+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> A baby stuffed dinosaur! A green spotted, blue spiked baby dinosaur!<br />
(Note: I BRIEFLY called him a brontosaur but after the ensuing wikipedia battle with my husband I came to realize it is only correct to call him a diplodocus. Who knew brontosaurus is no longer acceptable?- since about the turn of the century?!)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio_Jg3OpocK0fSIwLzfrBqOBSWI5QnyLgJcsil5G9S_225x3jZeU8GifT6OaYcyxtCuRqnj_ilRMGFkndovcniVAuz_2qurxqpZ-C3c6UMv8Y5gs7QM1k46nbrZoC6udp09ltETcHuisfE/s1600/Dinosaur+stuffed+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio_Jg3OpocK0fSIwLzfrBqOBSWI5QnyLgJcsil5G9S_225x3jZeU8GifT6OaYcyxtCuRqnj_ilRMGFkndovcniVAuz_2qurxqpZ-C3c6UMv8Y5gs7QM1k46nbrZoC6udp09ltETcHuisfE/s320/Dinosaur+stuffed+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> I was incredibly surprised at how well he turned out (I freely admit he is not my first dino, but the last one was tried about a year ago and I still haven't emptied the bag that the resulting demented half-creature lives...)<br />
I made him with some super cheap bits of cotton that I already had in my stash and I used shrink plastic for his eyes. I'm a bit amazed at how much I like his eyes- they even follow you around!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFg2ycEWwtaDh9MmS7kNVK-ClpwdW2U2JkRj2r74fOdFqtZR4CMKzS_w-09jG23FTSzVUdsua3gpJcjgu51xh7HwmGMwLDn1iVgvGs2ZuNk_PAqHjXV1HEUI1BRY0oM-yk3ItGKmu1ivSk/s1600/Dinosaur+stuffed+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFg2ycEWwtaDh9MmS7kNVK-ClpwdW2U2JkRj2r74fOdFqtZR4CMKzS_w-09jG23FTSzVUdsua3gpJcjgu51xh7HwmGMwLDn1iVgvGs2ZuNk_PAqHjXV1HEUI1BRY0oM-yk3ItGKmu1ivSk/s320/Dinosaur+stuffed+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>So! Do you think I should make a tutorial and a pattern for everyone to have their own precious dino? I'm sure my construction could be figured out from my photos but its sometimes nice to have some help at 2am!<br />
Let me know in the comments below.Anathemahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08108979281486557853noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1347387927042023541.post-11353132683672628572011-01-26T20:50:00.000+00:002011-01-26T20:50:05.538+00:00Reworked for Oxfam IIICan't believe its taken me so long to bounce back from the Christmas crafty madness! I felt so drained of creative energy. To get back in the swing of things here's a peek at some of the projects from the Reworked for Oxfam shop I volunteer at:<br />
<br />
This was just a black heavy skirt that needed some creativity.<br />
First- a crusty shot with flash: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_hznrNDWpTQSeN1G-EM_crGPCqp16nv7wOuk87PnaZc-N4543Kxsu1bHWl3WTd3dtGQv0gZvkn7RTzWGwMAkLmJb1hMG_9ImyoRb3R1NoxYH2TISU7vT8V1gZLTJukyZrYAjDVXOmp6ez/s1600/teapot+skirt1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_hznrNDWpTQSeN1G-EM_crGPCqp16nv7wOuk87PnaZc-N4543Kxsu1bHWl3WTd3dtGQv0gZvkn7RTzWGwMAkLmJb1hMG_9ImyoRb3R1NoxYH2TISU7vT8V1gZLTJukyZrYAjDVXOmp6ez/s320/teapot+skirt1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>And a close up of one of the teapots:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHvSk9n7PrKKCOwGl6EJaBoGi6eq3Kl6i6Kz8eGBSXC94Zq2-MZ6JrverVfGBnLBRp7oZb3uUwPCHtSAAUBW7XtFdsp4726pQfiGMDYSyVMGmo3YJmv6KcEk_RcQEL0l_wD3IkNZdLCvLP/s1600/teapot+skirt3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHvSk9n7PrKKCOwGl6EJaBoGi6eq3Kl6i6Kz8eGBSXC94Zq2-MZ6JrverVfGBnLBRp7oZb3uUwPCHtSAAUBW7XtFdsp4726pQfiGMDYSyVMGmo3YJmv6KcEk_RcQEL0l_wD3IkNZdLCvLP/s320/teapot+skirt3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Then one of my absolute favourites! A messenger bag made from men's neck ties. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRv4OxfNy-cj2LnOXXeGXzS_lgjGRlxlagUCKeGp3kpe-Ud83SMTu2BtULMOBL8BenIOL8M8X21Y8WYDIobmAIjNXGqEPmslmAC3gbSTA3aPKINzVKbZWeY5Hf-ViWZ7eCXRxkYXRuzZw2/s1600/tie+bag1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRv4OxfNy-cj2LnOXXeGXzS_lgjGRlxlagUCKeGp3kpe-Ud83SMTu2BtULMOBL8BenIOL8M8X21Y8WYDIobmAIjNXGqEPmslmAC3gbSTA3aPKINzVKbZWeY5Hf-ViWZ7eCXRxkYXRuzZw2/s320/tie+bag1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> The cutest button in the world to close it:<br />

The rest are not things I made for Oxfam but they aren't important enough to get their own post. I made about a million (it felt like) zippered pouches for presents and for my shop. Each of these beauties is lined and has pleats and a lobster claw closure.<br />

An adult sized super hero cape with a ninja logo and eye mask.<br />
Look how tiny my satin stitch had to be to keep the detail on the ninja. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5mcfMnBTLBJ2i8C8fAg_XZOiT7C0luZcI8QVQ8b3R0hs4JzYOOMbVtFn_wn3wx8OQL6KeahIaccOFUEcqPkcgNSUQYFTOhUbXs2sgJ1CT0yNMKeKIcDFymklReZT1Fpsg3d9InD8OeAaa/s1600/cape3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5mcfMnBTLBJ2i8C8fAg_XZOiT7C0luZcI8QVQ8b3R0hs4JzYOOMbVtFn_wn3wx8OQL6KeahIaccOFUEcqPkcgNSUQYFTOhUbXs2sgJ1CT0yNMKeKIcDFymklReZT1Fpsg3d9InD8OeAaa/s320/cape3.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>You can't see them?- that's right! I think the width of his sword is only about 5ml so it was eye straining work. I should also add that I love interfacing to stabilize the fabric so it won't fray and also wonderful hem tape which I cut into tiny tiny bits to hold all of it together whilst sewing.<br />
But even with all this help I could not do the letters, so I used the freezer paper method to make a stencil and paint them on.<br />
The mask is made of cotton and rimmed in bias binding tape, mostly by hand.<br />

I stained it with tea and sewed on the front lace panel and sewed on the buttons. <br />
Next was a grey skirt which just needed a little something so I made a removable brooch of Zipper flowers:<br />
